Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to contest certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
